Historic Natchez Trace

Much of the historic Natchez Trace still exists outside the boundaries of the Natchez Trace Parkway (The national park runs generally parallel to the old wagon highway but rarely over it). The old wagon highway that President Thomas Jefferson built for wheel travel became county and state highways and city streets. Along the old route, visitors can see buildings, rivers, streams, and cemeteries that were familiar to Natchez Trace travelers of earlier eras. Scroll down for views of the old Trace referenced in the Fighting Devil’s Backbone series.
